Destination 20 : Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

Date of Visit: 23 September 2011

We had another one-day visit to Luxembourg City. Honestly, I do not know what's there to visit at all in Luxembourg. Doesn't hear much of this country. I guess most of the time people would come here for the nature and landscape in the countryside, which I heard is very beautiful.

In fact, the city itself is very beautiful. It's split between 2 parts, the old city and the new city. The old city is perched on a mountain top, and some of the city walls are still clearly visible. The old city is very charming and beautiful. It feels very peaceful and serene to walk through the old city.

Here's something interesting... can you guess the flag of Luxembourg?

Both are almost identical.

Most of the photos are taken in the old city, and there isn't much to differentiate between them, so I'm just going to dump them all below for your viewing pleasure.

We stayed in a Hosteling International hostel. It was located very close to the old city, but the drawback is that it is at the bottom of the hill from the old city, which meant a lot of stairs to climb. The hostel itself is very new, and all the facilities are very clean. Couldn't have ask for more.

We met a Colombian student who is studying french in Lyon. He traveled alone to Luxembourg and asked us if he can join us to visit the city. Of course we agreed. It is very interesting to talk to him, and hear his stories about Columbia.

There was also a group of people dressed in the traditional Bavarian costumes who stayed in the hostel. It seemed as though they had just came back from the Oktoberfest in Munich. Haha

It so happened that we visited on the 4th saturday of the month, which means that there is a sunday market. The market is just like any other market, except that all the stalls are in vans. They sell everything, from roast chickens, to spices, to vegetables, to flowers. There were also little children running around to give out free croissants!

As we had to check out rather early the following day, we have to carry all our stuffs with us the whole morning. We decided to walk to the train station, about 3km away. It felt like a route march with all the gears, just like the good old days, so I've decided to strike up a pose, of high kneeling with FBO(no helmet and rifle) with map in hand to navigate(usually done by Heex) =)

After visiting Luxembourg, I realised that it is a very nice place to retire in. So peaceful and tranquil. Maybe I'll do that next time, when I got the money, unless I find a better place.
